U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander argues that renewable energy cannot meet near-term electricity demands and advocates for continued coal use with carbon capture, nuclear expansion, and electric vehicle adoption. The op-ed addresses the TVA's Kingston coal ash…
“Gov. Bredesen is talking about creating 'green-collar' jobs, and he is making it happen. But ironically and sadly our delegation and primary utility (TVA) isn't doing much to promote renewable energy.”
“I think it's very important for TVA to diversify its energy portfolio, and it's a shrewd political move in recognition of the changes that are likely to come with a new administration. It represents a real change.”
“And as the drought continues, TVA and other utilities in the region keep pushing for more water-guzzling nuclear power.”
“The Southeast will be disproportionately hurt by global warming, and we need our senators and congressmen to stand up and lead the fight against this threat”
“I would think that you would want to populate the board with people who are knowledgeable about the mission of TVA”
“We see that every day in our work, how little knowledge there is about where energy comes from, how we produce and consume it, and the implications on the environment and human health”
“We don't think that in the long term subsidizing the construction of two or three nuclear plants is going to make that much difference in America's energy policy. We'd like to see a more environmentally responsible approach than contaminating another site in Alabama with radioactive wastes. But it's still not at all clear that Wall Street is ready to invest in nuclear power.”
“We feel very strongly that the current mercury rule is not protective enough for human health and the environment. It is also not protective enough for Smoky Mountains National Park.”
“No utility is interested in building a nuclear plant without massive government subsidies. The new energy bill gives all kinds of tax breaks to the nuclear industry, and now NuStart wants even more tax breaks from state and local governments.”
“A lot of us are saying, 'Oh, no, we're going to have to fight this battle again,'”
“bird kills are an issue, but more birds are killed by house cats, communications towers and windows”
“the vote showed Alexander is "clearly out of step with the vast majority of U.S. senators."”
“He's making reckless, mean-spirited attacks on renewable energy when, to my knowledge, he has never even been to a wind farm”
“Sen. Alexander's bill is the most direct assault on wind power and other renewable energy sources that we've ever seen”
