The Southeast Coastal Climate Network, created by the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, hosted a teleconference on rising sea levels and global warming threats to the Lowcountry. Scientists project sea levels could rise 2.5 feet by 2050 and up to 5 feet by century's end, threatening Hilton Head's beaches and coastal infrastructure. SACE executive director Stephen Smith emphasized the economic imperative of addressing climate change, noting South Carolina's $15 billion tourism economy and potential for clean energy job creation.
We've got a $15 billion tourism economy sitting right in that zone. When you look at the potential for home-grown energy and the jobs we can create, you match that against the tremendous economic losses we stand to suffer here in South Carolina. We can't afford to not address this.
