Utility to pay Tennessee coal ash victims $27.8M

The Tennessee Valley Authority has agreed to pay $27.8 million to settle claims from over 800 property owners affected by a 2008 coal ash spill at its Kingston Fossil Plant. Stephen Smith, executive director of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, praised the settlement as closing a chapter on the disaster while noting that the broader coal ash regulatory issue remains unresolved, with the EPA under court order to finalize coal ash regulations by December 19.

We're hoping people can move on with their lives and put this chapter behind them. But the final chapter on coal ash hasn't been written.
