TALLAHASSEE, Florida — The state office representing utility customers is taking aim at Florida Power & Light Co.'s continued massive solar expansion plans ahead of a crucial vote by regulators this week.
The Office of Public Counsel said in a brief filed with the Public Service Commission that FPL's solar plans are "expensive, unnecessary and decreasingly cost-effective." The filing comes ahead of a Thursday PSC vote on FPL's proposed rate hike settlement that would allow it to collect nearly $6 billion in additional revenue over the next four years.
FPL is asking to build another 72 solar facilities over the next four years and plans 165 after that, Public Counsel Walt Trierweiler wrote in a Nov. 10 brief, which covered a variety of issues in the case.
"In total, FPL plans to cover at least 142,200 additional acres of our beautiful Florida land in solar panels over the next decade," Trierweiler wrote.
