US utility firms spent big preparing power grid for storms – and still failed

Following December 2022 winter storms that caused rolling blackouts across the southeast despite billions in grid improvements after the 2014 polar vortex, utilities continue investing in natural gas plants despite their poor performance in extreme weather. Clean energy advocates, including SACE research director Maggie Shober, argue that over-reliance on natural gas is problematic and that utilities should pursue renewable alternatives instead of building more gas infrastructure.
