U.S. Regulator Halts Nuclear-Plant Licensing
In this mention
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission halted all final nuclear reactor licensing decisions following a federal appeals court ruling that struck down the NRC's Waste Confidence Decision. The court found the NRC's assumption that a permanent nuclear waste repository would eventually be created was not credible, particularly after the Obama administration eliminated funding for Yucca Mountain. Southern Alliance for Clean Energy was among 24 groups that petitioned the NRC to freeze licensing decisions pending completion of environmental impact studies on spent nuclear fuel storage and disposal.
This Commission decision halts all final licensing decisions -- but not the licensing proceedings themselves -- until NRC completes a thorough study of the environmental impacts of storing and disposing of spent nuclear fuel.
