TVA says no for now to 'clean coal' option
In this mention
TVA Director Skila Harris announced the utility will not pursue coal-gasification technology at this time, citing cost concerns. Stephen Smith of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy criticized the decision as a disappointment, arguing that coal gasification would be far cleaner than TVA's aging coal-fired plants and position the utility as an industry leader in addressing air pollution.
We need to get something like gasification. We need to retire the dirty old power plants, and then not only would TVA have reliable power from using an abundant resource (coal) that we have here, but they would also be providing leadership to the industry. They would be solving some of the real difficult problems we're dealing with on air pollution.
