TVA's long-term power network grows as Jackson, Tennessee, utility signs purchase agreement

In this mention

Jackson Energy Authority, a municipal utility in Jackson, Tennessee, has signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with TVA, becoming the 146th local power company to do so. Stephen Smith, executive director of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, criticizes the long-term agreements as disadvantageous to local utilities and their customers, arguing they limit flexibility and renewable energy adoption. TVA is offering a 3.1% discount to utilities signing the agreements and has committed to reducing carbon emissions by 80% by 2035.

We continue to think that these long-term power agreements are a bad deal for local power companies and their customers. With these agreements, the local power companies are giving away their power and leverage to TVA at a time when much of the industry is moving away from central station generation to more distributed generation.
