TVA nonpower funding idea to be offered

Among those set to appear today before a congressional subcommittee delving into future funding of TVA's nonpower programs is Jan Jones, executive director of the nonprofit Tennessee River Valley Association based in Decatur, Ala.
Jones, whose TRVA group represents more than 350 businesses and civic leaders in the seven Tennessee Valley states, said she will propose in Washington, D.C., "a significant and historic change in the way these programs can be funded."
Jones said TRVA members are "deeply concerned" about prospects of other agencies assuming management of various TVA nonpower programs — including flood control and navigation — since TVA Chairman Craven Crowell last January proposed phasing out TVA's $106 million annual congressional subsidy by fiscal 1999.
U.S. Reps. John J. Duncan Jr., R-Tenn., and Bob Clement, D-Tenn., sought today's hearings before the Water Resources and Environment Subcommittee of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
Among East Tennesseans scheduled to participate in today's hearings are representatives of the Knoxville-based Tennessee Valley Energy Reform Coalition and several representing the Save Our Sequatchie group from Bledsoe and Sequatchie counties.
SOS members oppose plans by Pennsylvania-based Armstrong Energy Resources to build a $2 billion hydropower pumped storage plant atop a mountain at Laurel Branch in Bledsoe County.
