E&E NEWS PM | President Trump called for the removal of the Tennessee Valley Authority's CEO today, lashing out at his $8 million annual pay and criticizing the federal agency for outsourcing computer programming jobs.
Trump raised the issue during a White House event where he signed an executive order on hiring practices related to federal contracts.
The executive order follows TVA's announcement that it will outsource 20% of its technology jobs to companies based in foreign countries. Some of those workers will receive their last paycheck this month.
Trump acknowledged that he was made aware of the issue after seeing a television ad produced by U.S. Tech Workers, a nonprofit that wants to limit visas given to foreign technology workers, that aired in prime time on Fox News, according to the Associated Press.
The White House explicitly listed TVA's decision to cut those jobs as the reason for Trump's executive order, which he signed this afternoon. The order will require that all federal agencies make sure only U.S. citizens and nationals get those competitive service jobs. In other words, the order prevents federal agencies from replacing U.S. jobs with foreign labor, which is cheaper.
