Transportation Electrification in the Southeast: Fifth Annual Report/October 2024

The Southern Alliance for Clean Energy ("SACE") has issued:

Transportation Electrification in the Southeast – Fifth Annual Report/October 2024 ("Report").

The Report was prepared by Atlas Public Policy and is authored by:

  • Matthew Vining, Policy Analyst, Atlas Public Policy.
  • Moe Khatib, Policy Associate II, Atlas Public Policy.

Contributing authors include:

  • Stan Cross, Electric Transportation Program Director, SACE.
  • Dory Larsen, Senior Electric Transportation Program Manager, SACE.

The Report documents trends in the following Southeastern states from July 2023 – June 2024:

  • Alabama.
  • Florida.
  • Georgia.
  • North Carolina.
  • South Carolina.
  • Tennessee.

The Report is intended to benchmark progress on transportation electrification in these six states during that time period.

The Report concludes that over this time period vehicle manufacturers have significantly increased their investments in electric vehicles ("EV") in United States manufacturing facilities. This is stated to be due in part to leveraging federal tax credits provided by the Inflation Reduction Act. Further, the southeast is stated to be a major hub for private sector investment in EVs.

The six-state southeast region is stated to include:

  • More than 73,900 manufacturing jobs.
  • $78.2 billion in related industry investments.

This is stated to constitute 31% of the 238,000 EV and battery-related manufacturing jobs announced nationwide. Light-duty EV sales in the southeast are stated to have increased by 42% in the relevant time period. This is greater than the national average growth of 37%. The region is still noted to be behind the average national EV market share which approximates 10% in the second quarter.
