ENERGYWIRE | The nation's largest public power utility will start using electric vehicles as part of a goal to transition half of its fleet away from gasoline by 2030.
The Tennessee Valley Authority said yesterday that it wants all its light-duty and half of its medium-duty vehicles to be electric by the start of the next decade — up to 1,200 vehicles. The transformation will help TVA meet its own carbon-cutting goals, it said, as well as those of the Biden administration.
TVA has pledged to cut its carbon dioxide emissions 80 percent from 2005 levels by 2035 on the way to reaching net zero by 2050. President Biden has called for halving the nation's emissions by the start of the next decade and for the power sector to fully decarbonize by 2035.
"We're not out of line with the administration," TVA CEO Jeff Lyash told E&E News during an interview yesterday. "The thing to talk about is how far, how fast and at what cost."
