Task force urges caution on new power plants

Tennessee's task force on power plant development recommends a cautious two-year pilot program to review merchant power plant proposals. Dr. Stephen Smith of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy supports environmental review but criticizes the lack of specifics in the task force report. The state received over 100 power plant inquiries following electricity deregulation.

We welcome the review of these plants because we don't want Tennessee's environment and water to be sacrificed to make electricity for other parts of the country. But unfortunately, there are not a lot of details or specifics in this report.
