Supply chain snags hampering expansion of solar in Georgia, but slowdown expected to be temporary
In this mention
A new SACE report finds that supply chain disruptions—including COVID-19 impacts and a Commerce Department investigation into alleged tariff circumvention—are hampering solar expansion in Georgia and the Southeast. SACE revised downward its 2022 and 2023 solar generation forecasts by 10% and 8% respectively, though the organization expects recovery by 2024. SACE Solar Program Director Bryan Jacob emphasizes that south-to-north transmission infrastructure is critical to Georgia's solar growth, particularly to connect solar farms in southern Georgia to population centers in the north.
You can't get a 200-acre parcel of flat land up here. You start getting in the mountains, and it's more developed in the north. So, the way to reconcile that is to build a lot more south-to-north transmission. But you can't just snap your fingers and do that overnight.
