Summer brings openings and closings

The Savannah Clothing Company, at Bull and Bay, is up and running. Owner Ilana Bakalo plans to provide moderately priced, good quality clothes to a wide spectrum of tourists and locals.

With more stock on the way, the store is already full, mostly with bright, summery clothes. Bakalo hopes to have something to appeal to shoppers of all ages. Various accessories are also available, such as shoes, backpacks, and sunglasses.

There's not much retail along Bay Street, but it's still a great location since Bull Street is one of the tourists' most common routes to and from River Street.

I found out from some very unhappy patrons that Il Vostro closed last week.

Since being converted to a restaurant afew.yeais back, the store has gone through four different names, but only changed ownership once in that time. A number of businesses are already looking at taking over the three story space.

It doesn't have the best view, at least not until the City Market parking garage is leveled, but it fronts on Congress, Barnard, and St. Julian. A pretty visible spot.

Around the corner on Barnard, Marco Home has also closed. The windows are covered and the phone has been disconnected.

Despite the recent closings near City Market, there are still some big changes scheduled for later this summer or early in the fall. Clipper Trading Company will be expanding to Broughton and Barnard, and a tapas bar will open underneath The Gap.

And.in the old White Hardware building at Whitaker and Congress, the new home of The Lady & Sons looks to be making good progress.

PSAs for SACE

For nonprofit groups, producing high-quality public service announcements is often out of the question financially. Enter SCAD.

This past quarter, under the guidance of Professor Randy Akers, graduate video students made PSAs for SACE for the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy. In previous years students did work for such groups as the Humane Society, Bethesda and the King-Tisdell Cottage Foundation.

In a competition last week, three winning 30-second spots were selected. The students who may spot their worlc on tefevi.1it>n here (and maybe in otMr mar kets with SACE offiusl are /tHtin Meredith, Hema Mulchandani, and Michael Blamtein.

Safe Energy Director Sara Barczak was simply thrilled with the quality of all the completed spots.

I also hear that the Reel Savannah Film Group, which has films scheduled at the Lucas every Sunday between now and the end of July, is exploring the possibility of working with SCAD classes to design a poster for the group. The results would be twofold: giving the group a professional quality ad at low cost, and raising awareness of the film series among SCAD students.
