Southern Co. To Fight New Fed. Carbon Emission Rules
In this mention
Southern Company, the Atlanta-based utility giant operating over 30 coal-fired plants across the South, is mounting an aggressive lobbying campaign against new federal carbon emission rules announced by the Obama administration. The company spent a record $15.5 million on lobbying in 2012 and employs 53 federally registered lobbyists across 13 firms. Stephen Smith, executive director of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, criticizes Southern for taking the worst environmental positions and representing the laggard end of the spectrum on climate policy.
Southern tends to stake out what I would call the worst of the environmental positions generally. Therefore they tend to represent the sort of retro, laggard end of the spectrum.
Stephen A. Smith
