Restaurants serve up fryer oil for retail biofuel station

A new biodiesel fueling station opened in Atlanta in June 2012, created by the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy and Clean Energy Biofuels, which converts used fryer oil from local restaurants into biodiesel fuel. The operation collects grease from 200 participating restaurants on a monthly basis and pays them quarterly, while providing environmental and economic benefits. SACE executive director Stephen Smith highlighted the initiative as a closed-loop solution that keeps grease out of sewer systems and provides clean fuel for local consumers.
This is the only [operation] in Atlanta where a local restaurant can know for sure that [the oil] going out the back door will end up in their customers' tanks when they drive up to the front door. This is a win-win from cradle to grave. They're keeping the grease out of sewer systems and diverting it to a higher use. They're giving back something that is clean. It's a virtuous circle.
