Report: Sunshine State Buying More Than a Billion in Coal
In this mention
A Union of Concerned Scientists report reveals Florida power producers spent $1.3 billion importing coal in 2012, with costs rising to $88 per ton despite a 35% decrease in volume since 2008. Ulla Reeves of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy argues the state could redirect these investments toward cleaner energy sources, noting Florida ranks 34th nationally in energy efficiency and renewable energy supplied only 2% of the state's power in 2012.
The utility companies are sending money out of state to support a dirty industry. Those are dollars that could be saved and kept at home in Florida to support cleaner, more sustainable energy sources for the future
