Report raps utilities for pollution deaths

A new study commissioned by Clear the Air claims coal-fired power plants cause approximately 155 deaths annually in metropolitan Chattanooga, ranking the city second in the nation for pollution-related mortality. Dr. Stephen Smith of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy urges TVA and EPA to settle their ongoing court dispute over pollution standards. TVA and Southern Company dispute the study's methodology and contend that compliance would be prohibitively expensive.
We are strongly urging that TVA and EPA settle this in a way that benefits everyone. It's an injustice that EPA and TVA can't get back to the table. There is probably a narrow window of opportunity right now and these federal agencies need to move ahead.
