Andrea Sanders, coordinator of Alaska renewable energy for the Union of Concerned Scientists, writes a letter to the editor supporting a national Renewable Electricity Standard (RES) in response to Sen. Lisa Murkowski's concerns. Sanders cites a regional assessment by the World Resources Institute in partnership with the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy showing that renewable energy could meet 30 percent of the Southeast's electric power needs within 15 years, and argues that an RES would overcome market barriers, promote energy independence, create jobs, and provide price stability without significantly increasing electricity costs.
