Regulators approve plans for new Georgia Power plants driven by rising demand

Georgia utility regulators approved Georgia Power's plan to build three new fossil-fuel plants at Plant Yates near Atlanta to meet rising electricity demand driven by data center expansion. Environmental groups including the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy opposed the decision, arguing the company should face competitive bidding and bear risks of rising natural gas costs rather than passing them entirely to customers.

The utility industry in general and Georgia Power, in particular, have become increasingly reliant on gas. The Yates CTs would only deepen that gas addiction.
