Power surge eases in valley
In this mention
The article reports on a slowdown in merchant power plant development in the Tennessee Valley following the California energy crisis. TVA and state regulators are scaling back plans to purchase outside power, and Tennessee, Georgia, and Kentucky are implementing stricter review processes for independent power producers. Stephen Smith of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy expresses environmental concerns about merchant plants potentially polluting the valley to serve out-of-region customers.
Some of these merchant plants that use natural gas might be better for the environment than TVA's old coal plants. But there are a lot of environmental issues surrounding a power plant, and we certainly don't want to pollute the valley to provide electricity for other parts of the country
