ORNL hits on way
to lessen pollution
OAK RIDGE โ Scientists at
Oak Ridge National Laboratory
have come up with a biological
technique that turns a devilish
pollutant into a useful product.
The process uses bacteria to
convert sulfur dioxide โ one of
the pollutants from coal-fired
steam plants that cause acid rain
โ and other sulfur compounds
into hydrogen sulfide. Another
conversion then turns the materi-
al into common sulfur, which can
be used in the manufacture of
many products.
Eric Kaufman, a researcher in
ORNL's Bioprocessing Research
and Development Center, con-
ducted the experiments, along
with P.T. Selvaraj, a postdoctoral
scientist at the center.
