Nuclear power plant's generator tubes showing signs of wear

In this mention

Florida Power & Light's St. Lucie nuclear power plant Unit 2 has 3,745 steam generator tubes showing dents and wear indicators as of November 2012, despite replacement generators installed in 2007 that were intended to last until 2043. The Southern Alliance for Clean Energy is requesting that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission not bring the unit back online until tube inspection is complete and publicly reviewed. The NRC maintains that the wear comes from well-understood causes with no integrity problems.

Nuclear power plant's generator tubes showing signs of wear

02/25/2014

Another nuclear power plant's steam generator tubes are reportedly showing signs of premature wear.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, 3,745 tubes inside of Florida Power & Light's St. Lucie nuclear power plant generators have dents and wear indicators, as of November 2012. FP&L replaced the steam generators inside Unit 2 in 2007, intending for them to last until the plant's license expired in 2043.

The article said the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy is asking the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to not bring the unit back online until tube inspection is complete and publicly reviewed. A spokesperson with the NRC is quoted as saying that the steam generator tube wear comes from "existing, well-understood causes," and there is no problem with the steam generator or tube integrity.
