New rule to fight haze irks critics

The EPA announced a new anti-haze rule requiring states to reduce pollution at industrial sites contributing to haze at 156 national parks, including Great Smoky Mountains. Environmental groups, including SACE's Ulla-Britt Reeves, criticized the rule for containing loopholes that exempt certain power plants from compliance through pollution trading allowances. The rule aims to restore visibility in national parks to natural distances by 2064, with compliance expected to cost $1.5 billion annually but generate up to $10 billion in health and economic benefits.
