Georgia Power announced plans to retire 15 coal and oil-fired generating units at four plants, comprising 2,061 megawatts of capacity. Amelia Shenstone of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy praised the decision as significant progress, noting the plants are 44-70 years old and well beyond their 30-year expected lifespan. The announcement aligns with a Union for Concerned Scientists report identifying Georgia as having the most coal plants eligible for closure.
