Massages, discount haircuts part of Earth Day

What do a basketball, scissors, magic fingers and Beetles have in common?
All will be part of the inaugural Earth Day in the Park on Saturday and help raise money for clean energy devices used by the Tennessee Valley Authority.
Red Jasper Spa is the event organizer and will offer discount hair-care and massage services and donate all proceeds to the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy.
The event will be at Delano Park, beginning at 8 a.m. and last as long as crowds remain.
Normally $30 to $40 haircuts will be $10.
Seated massages, normally costing $20, will be $10.
The spa also will offer free rosemary-mint hand treatments.
In addition to the spa services, the event will include a three-on-three basketball tournament and a Volkswagen car show.
Cost per basketball team is $75, and the winning team gets $300.
Registration starts at 8.
Other events
Organizers also will have a concession stand, a moonwalk for children and a booth selling silver jewelry.
A portion of proceeds from the latter will go to the fund-raiser, according to Red Jasper owner Glenn Mitchell.
Red Jasper joined Aveda spas in four Southeastern states in organizing an Earth Day fund-raiser.
Last year, Aveda raised more than $100,000 to help buy windmills that supply electric power to TVA.
The windmills, which stand on Buffalo Mountain, Tenn., cost about $15,000 apiece.
