The U.S. Department of Energy selected TVA's Watts Bar Nuclear Plant near Spring City, Tennessee, as the primary site for producing tritium, a radioactive material used in nuclear weapons, with Sequoyah as backup. The decision rejected TVA's more expensive proposal to complete the Bellefonte Nuclear Plant in Alabama. Stephen Smith, president of the Tennessee Valley Energy Reform Coalition, praised the choice of the existing Watts Bar facility over completing Bellefonte as avoiding significant taxpayer liability.
