Lawsuits seen as positive by envionmental group
Eight states and New York City have filed suit against the Tennessee Valley Authority, Southern Company and three other large power companies for global warming pollution, according to a press release.
The move was praised by Stephen Smith., executive director of Southern Alliance for Clean Energy.
"TVA's track record on reducing greenhouse gas emission is poor," Smith said in a press release. "The agency does not have a serious commitment to energy efficiency, and only an anemic effort to promote renewable energy. TVA has refused to embrace new technologies that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions."
According to the New York Times, the plaintiff states are California, New York, Connecticut, Iowa, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Vermont and Wisconsin.
The Times said the other companies named in the suit were American Electric Power, Cinergy and Xcel Energy.
"Representatives of some of the companies named in the suit said they were already acting to curb emissions of carbon dioxide and that the courts were not the right place to deal with the problem," the New York Times report said.
Warren Rural Electric Cooperative Corporation announced in May its intentions to switch power providers in 2008 from TVA to Eastern Kentucky Power Cooperative.
