Hyundai's 'virtual' solar for Georgia plant reflects 'backward process,' critics say
In this mention
Hyundai's Georgia EV manufacturing plant is purchasing renewable energy credits from a Texas solar project rather than investing in in-state solar infrastructure, a practice critics say reflects Georgia's lack of renewable energy investment and allows Georgia Power to continue building fossil fuel capacity. SACE research director Maggie Shober explains that virtual power purchase agreements across different electrical grids are less effective than on-site or in-state renewable projects at directly offsetting a company's actual energy load.
The best (scenario) would be projects on-site, or at least in the same service territory and state, if applicable. Those are going to most directly offset the company's load.
