'Green Power' cake special for happy couple
October 20, 2002
They're being called the "Green Power" couple, and they've got the cake to prove it.
Top East Tennessee environmentalists Stephen Smith and Libby Hill are marrying Nov. 9, and on Thursday, their friends at Community Shares and the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy threw them a wedding shower.
Smith is the executive director of the alliance, and Hill is its development director.
The Southern Alliance is a member of Community Shares, a fund-raising organization that aids its network of member agencies.
The big hit at the shower was the highly stylized cake, specially made by Rita's Bakery in Fountain City.
Given the alliance's crusading work on air-quality problems, it appropriately featured a bear on a respirator in front of a denuded tree in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
"Being politically minded individuals, we planned the wedding for after the election," Hill said Friday.
That way, she said, in the future, there would be no conflicts with anniversary trips.
"We can work really hard in a campaign and know we'll be free to celebrate afterward," Hill said.
