Global warming issue hardly 'unsettled'
The article by Southern Co. CEO David Ratcliffe is extraordinarily misleading ("Balance growth, environmental needs," Equal Time, July 27).
Global warming science is not "unsettled." A 2001 National Academy of Sciences report commissioned by the Bush administration found that greenhouse gases are building up as a result of human activities, causing temperatures to rise. Ratcliffe also failed to acknowledge that Southern Co. is the second-largest carbon dioxide polluter in the United States. Instead, he tries to minimize the contribution of the company's carbon dioxide emissions to the global warming problem.
In recent Georgia utility regulatory proceedings, Southern Co. strongly opposed significant energy efficiency programs. It continues to drag its feet on offering green renewable energy, and instead pursues nuclear power.
