Florida Power & Light asks to continue to collect for Turkey Point expansion

In this mention

Florida Power & Light requested permission to continue collecting fees from customers for the Turkey Point nuclear expansion project despite uncertainty about costs and timelines. George Cavros, an attorney for the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, urged regulators to reject the request, warning that consumers should not suffer the same financial consequences as Duke Energy customers who paid over $1 billion for a canceled nuclear project. The PSC was expected to decide on the rate request in fall 2013.

FPL consumers don't want to suffer the same fate as Duke Energy customers. The company is five years into the project and still can't commit to a price for the project, a date for the project and it can't commit to the 2022 time frame — or commit that the project will be built at all. We feel that is inconsistent with commission rules.

George Cavros
