EPA eases clean air regulations

The Bush administration eased Clean Air Act regulations to help aging coal-fired power plants avoid costly pollution control equipment. Ulla Reeves of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy criticized the move, stating that utilities violating New Source Review requirements contribute to thousands of deaths and asthma attacks annually. TVA officials defended their position, arguing stricter standards could reduce coal plant electricity supply by 30 percent.
TVA and other utilities hit with New Source Review violations are contributing to up to 4,475 deaths and more than 87,000 asthma attacks each year. Despite some voluntary commitments to reduce pollution from utilities like the Tennessee Valley Authority, there are still thousands of additional tons of emissions that are not being controlled.
