The Florida Public Service Commission held a workshop on September 17, 2020, to discuss rolling back net metering for rooftop solar but decided not to change the rule. Susan Glickman, Florida Director for SACE, commented that with rooftop solar meeting less than 1% of Florida's energy needs, there is no justification for changing the net metering policy, emphasizing solar's benefits for consumers and the local economy. The PSC received over 16,000 public comments opposing changes to net metering.
Rooftop solar in Florida is growing, but at less than 1% of our energy need being met with customer owned systems, why would Florida change its net metering rule? If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Solar helps consumers save money, creates local jobs keeping energy dollars in the state while protecting our natural environment. Thankfully the PSC took no action in their recent workshop, but we must be watchful for any effort to block solar choice should it rise again at the PSC or in the Florida legislature.
