Duke explores shutting coal-fired plants by 2030 in South Carolina plans
In this mention
Duke Energy filed revised integrated resource plans with South Carolina regulators proposing to retire all coal-fired plants by 2030 and add 3,000 MW of solar and 600 MW of wind over 15 years. Environmental groups, including SACE's Maggie Shober, praised the increased solar commitments but criticized Duke's continued reliance on nearly 10 GW of new natural gas plants as a bridge fuel during the energy transition.
Duke's modified resource plans for its two utilities in the Carolinas are a step in the right direction, with more solar than was proposed in its original plan nearly a year ago. However, Duke is continuing to plan for nearly 10 GW of new gas plants.
