Duke Energy makes deal to end challenge to Cliffside permit

Environmental organizations including the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy have agreed to drop their legal challenge to Duke Energy's Cliffside coal plant expansion permit in exchange for Duke's commitment to close over 1,600 megawatts of older coal plants by 2015. The settlement clears the final legal hurdles for the 825-megawatt Cliffside plant, which is over 90% complete and scheduled to begin operations in 2012.
