Dominion Energy, NextEra want to merge. Community groups are wary of the public benefit
In this mention
Dominion Energy and NextEra Energy have proposed a $67 billion merger that would create the nation's largest regulated utility provider. Community groups including the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy have expressed skepticism about public benefits, with SACE's Eddy Moore warning that the deal could prioritize corporate interests over ratepayer affordability and environmental protection.
Bigger is not always better, when it comes to controlling the cost and environmental impact of electric service. As proposed, NextEra and Dominion stockholders could make billions of dollars in exchange for giving customers in South Carolina effectively peanuts. Our state officials should not rubberstamp the transfer of this state-guaranteed monopoly without strong guarantees around affordability and environmental impact.
