Budget Proposal to Sell TVA Blasted by Republicans, Clean Energy Groups

The White House's 2014 budget proposal to sell or partially divest the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has drawn criticism from both Republicans and clean energy advocates. SACE Executive Director Stephen A. Smith argues that the sale would not reduce federal costs and would shift burdens to taxpayers, while also raising ethical concerns about assets acquired through eminent domain and ratepayer investments. Smith contends there is room for TVA reform but warns against radical ownership changes without careful consideration.

The sale of TVA would shift those burdens back to the federal taxpayer to the tune of tens of millions of dollars each year. In addition, it is unclear that the sale of TVA's assets would bring significant additional revenues to the federal coffers once its debt and 'debt-like obligations' are repaid
