ENERGYWIRE | Clean energy advocates are doubling down on calls for the nation's largest public power utility to align its carbon reduction goals with those of the Biden administration after the White House announced several nominees to the agency's board last week.

President Biden made four selections Tuesday for the Tennessee Valley Authority's nine-member board, choosing people with backgrounds in clean energy, electricity and labor ( E&E News PM, April 20). Environmentalists are hopeful that Biden can put his stamp on the board — which is currently filled with members tapped during the Trump administration — and push the federal agency to decarbonize further.

"TVA's Board of Directors should play an important part in the administration's efforts to achieve a 100% clean electricity sector by 2035," said Jonathan Levenshus, federal campaigns director for the Sierra Club's Beyond Coal campaign. "I expect these nominees will work alongside the current directors and TVA management to advance solutions that address some of the Tennessee Valley's biggest economic and environmental challenges, including how to make the necessary transition from dirty fuels to renewable energy and better efficiency."
