Bay area electric bills to spike in 2014
In this mention
Duke Energy proposes a significant rate increase for Florida customers in 2014, raising average bills to $124.30 per 1,000 kilowatt hours—the highest among major Florida utilities. Susan Glickman of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy argues that energy efficiency investments and reformed utility regulation could reduce bills, rather than continuing to fund expensive power plant construction like the failed Crystal River nuclear project.
What's outrageous is we can do so much better reducing people's energy bills by investing in cost-effective energy efficiency. To do that, we need to look at utility regulation that rewards construction of power plants. Past decisionmaking brought us this expensive attempt to bring on nuclear power. Until we realign the incentives, we will continue to get expensive power.
