Area fails to meet pollution standards

In this mention

The EPA declared the Knoxville Metropolitan Statistical Area in non-attainment of federal health standards for fine particulate pollution (PM 2.5), affecting Blount, Knox, Hamilton, Sevier, and Loudon counties. The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation challenged the EPA's methodology and indicated it may seek legal relief. Environmental groups including the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy stated that particle pollution from power plants contributes to thousands of premature deaths annually and degrades air quality in the Great Smoky Mountains.

particle pollution from power plants alone shortens the lives of nearly 24,000 Americans annually including nearly 1,000 Tennesseans. This pollution also ruins mountain scenery in the Smokies and contributes to acid rain making the Great Smoky Mountains America's most-polluted national park
