Anti-Nuclear Groups in Georgia Seek to Block First New Nuclear Plants in U.S. in Decades
In this mention
Democracy Now! interviews Stephen Smith, executive director of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, about a coalition of nine anti-nuclear groups seeking to block Southern Company's construction of two new reactors at Georgia's Vogtle plant—the first new U.S. nuclear reactors since 1978. Smith discusses how nuclear power relies on federal subsidies and loan guarantees because Wall Street will not invest, and criticizes the Republican Party's inconsistency in opposing government spending while supporting nuclear power subsidies.
You would think that the conservative party would be conservatively approaching use of both ratepayer money and taxpayer money and that they would want transparency and openness. Yet we've heard virtually nothing from anyone in the Republican Party.
Stephen A. Smith
