After years of setbacks, new Plant Vogtle unit hits ‘100 percent power’ for first time
In this mention
Plant Vogtle's Unit 3 nuclear reactor reached 100% power capacity on May 29, 2023, marking a major milestone for the nation's first nuclear expansion in 30 years. Stephen Smith, executive director of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, criticized the project's massive cost overruns ($14 billion to $35 billion) and argued the investment should have gone to renewable energy instead. Georgia Power customers will face significant rate increases to cover the nuclear expansion and other fuel costs.
Clearly getting the reactor up to 100% power is the milestone, but the milestone came at what cost? This has been a very tumultuous and difficult process for ratepayers.
