$1.7 billion bill to restart reactor
In this mention
TVA is considering reactivating Browns Ferry Unit 1, its oldest nuclear reactor, at an estimated cost of $1.73–$1.86 billion over five years. Stephen Smith, executive director of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, criticized the proposal as economically and environmentally unsound, arguing TVA has a bias toward nuclear power and that better alternatives exist for meeting regional energy needs.
This reactor had a poor performance record in the past and there are a lot better alternatives for our energy needs than continuing to generate more deadly radioactive wastes. I'm afraid that the staff of TVA has a definite bias toward building more nuclear power and is directing the board down a dangerous path for ratepayers.
