New Release Shows Risk in Plant Washington
Atlanta, Ga. (December 1, 2008) – Southern Alliance for Clean Energy and GreenLaw will host a tele-press conference to announce the release of a new report, “The Risks of Participating in Plant Washington,” that raises serious questions about the financial risks of building a new coal-fired electric power plant in the current economic environment.
This in-depth report suggests that clean energy technologies pose fewer risks and offer greater flexibility to residential, commercial and industrial ratepayers seeking reliable, affordable, and environmentally sustainable energy options for their homes and businesses. Georgia decision makers are considering two coal-fired power plant proposals—Plant Washington, proposed by Power4Georgians, a consortium of electric membership corporations (EMCs) led by Cobb EMC, and Plant Longleaf, proposed by Dynegy, a Houston energy conglomerate, and currently on appeal at the Court of Appeals. Neither proposal is included in the recommendations of the Governor’s State Energy Strategy, which focuses on energy efficiency and power production from new, renewable sources.
The study’s lead author, David Schlissel, a Senior Consultant with Synapse Energy Economics, will discuss the key findings of the report. Steve Smith, president of Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, a leader in developing clean energy options, will be available to answer questions as will others in this work.
