The Southern Alliance for Clean Energy (SACE) welcomes TVA’s announcement today to retire 1000 Megawatts of dirty old coal-fired units at three power plants in the Tennessee Valley. Dr. Stephen A. Smith, Executive Director of SACE, believes that this is absolutely the right direction for TVA and applauds the Authority for moving forward on the retirements. “We agree that there are more plants within the TVA system that need to be considered for additional retirements, but we welcome today’s announcement,” says Dr. Smith.

SACE is an active participant in the Integrated Resource Planning (IRP) process and looks forward to the ongoing discussions that are taking place within that process for the future of some of TVA’s generating assets, including these old coal plants. “This is a good day for public health, clean air, and the environment” Dr. Smith remarked.
