Expanding Awareness of Global Warming Impacts to Latinos Miami, Florida — Today, Southern Alliance for Clean Energy (SACE) re-releases two of their compelling global warming videos now subtitled in Spanish. The clean energy advocates hope the translated videos will expand outreach and education to Latino communities about coastal vulnerability from global warming during this important time, on the heels of the international climate negotiations last month in Copenhagen. “We recognize that there are so many useful global warming resources out there that have not been made available to Spanish speaking audiences,” stated Ulla Reeves, regional program director for Southern Alliance for Clean Energy. “Our goal is to increase the amount of translated materials to communities that will be disproportionately impacted by global warming and enable a greater diversity of interested citizens to join the movement to address the climate crisis.”
Treasured Places in Peril: Everglades takes viewers on a journey through the Florida Keys and Everglades National Park, interviewing concerned citizens and scientists who are already seeing and feeling the effects of global warming. SACE’s Sea Level Rise Impacts to Florida video puts a very human face on global warming. This video uses striking images produced by Architecture2030 and Google Earth to depict how populous cities such as Miami and Tampa could be drastically altered by global warming impacts including sea level rise and storm surges if action is not taken now.
According to a new Oxfam America Report (http://www.oxfamamerica.org/publications/exposed) that researched social vulnerability and climate change, Florida’s large Latino immigrant population is especially vulnerable. The report states that the Latino community often has “language and cultural barriers that hinder disaster preparedness.” Latino populations also tend to live in at-risk coastal areas. For example, in counties vulnerable to sea level rise and stronger storms such as Miami-Dade, Pinellas, Sarasota and Charlotte, have populations upwards of 60% Latino.
Through educational products such as these videos, SACE hopes to raise the level of awareness within Spanish-speaking communities and empower those citizens to become part of the climate and energy debate at this critical junction in our nations’ history. With climate talks in Copenhagen renewing both an international and domestic interest in addressing global warming, we have an important opportunity to address this challenge now. These videos serve as a resource to engage Latinos in Florida who are on the frontlines of coastal climate impacts. All citizens are needed to raise their voices in calling for action at the local, state and federal levels, joining the millions at the forefront of the fight to stop global warming.

Enero 12, — Hoy, La Alianza del Sur para Energías Limpias (Southern Alliance for Clean Energy -SACE) reestrena dos de sus videos sobre calentamiento global ahora subtitulados en español. Los miembros del grupo de energías limpias esperan que con la traducción de los videos al español, se ayude a difundir y promover educación acerca del impacto del calentamiento en zonas costeras.

“Reconocemos que existe mucho material educativo valioso acerca de las amenazas que representa el calentamiento global que no están disponibles para la audiencia de habla hispana” dice Ulla Reeves, Directora Regional del Programa de SACE. “Nuestra meta es incrementar el número de material traducido a comunidades que estarán desproporcionadamente impactadas por el calentamiento global, y que estén disponibles a una gran diversidad de ciudadanos interesados en unirse al movimiento para enfrentar la crisis climática.
El video “Lugares Preciados en Peligro: Los Everglades”, lleva a los visitantes a un viaje a través de los Cayos de la Florida y El Parque Nacional de los Everglades, entrevistando ciudadanos y científicos preocupados quienes están ya viendo y sintiendo los efectos del cambio climático. El otro video de SACE “Los impactos de la subida del nivel del mar en la Florida y Miami” nos pone de cara al cambio climático global. A través de material educativo como estos videos, SACE espera incrementar el nivel de concientización dentro de la comunidad de habla Hispana y potencializar a los ciudadanos que quieren ser parte del debate sobre clima y energía, en este momento crítico en la historia de nuestra nación. Todos los ciudadanos necesitan levantar sus voces llamando a la acción local, estatal y federal uniéndose a los millones de personas que luchan por frenar el calentamiento global.
