Carbon emissions from jet-fuel have been increasing 5% per year, and last year, Americans flew a record high 1.5 trillion miles.

Transportation has surpassed the energy sector and is now the most carbon intensive sector in our economy; and SACE is working diligently throughout our region to electrify the transportation sector by advancing the deployment of electric vehicles and to make sure we are adding renewable energy to the grid to power them. At the same time, we recognize the need to address another aspect of the transportation sector: Air travel. 

Flying is incredibly carbon intensive. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, one round-trip flight from Washington, D.C. to Bejing emits more CO2 per passenger than the average car in the United States does in an entire year. 

At current rates of passenger flight growth, air travel could account for over 25% of global carbon emissions by 2050. Of course, reducing or avoiding flying is one of the most effective steps we can take as individuals to combat climate change. Flying less is best, but it’s not realistic to always stay grounded.

What is Jet-Set Offset?

Jet-Set Offset is a New England-based initiative founded in 2018 that provides a platform for individuals to mitigate the impact of carbon emissions from flying by contributing to non-profit organizations working to reduce carbon emissions in other ways. Sign up with Jet-Set Offset and automatically donate 1 cent for every mile you fly.

How it Works

Visit Jet-Set Offset to sign-up using your email. Select Southern Alliance for Clean Energy as your favorite environmental cause, and you’re on your way to putting your carbon offsets on autopilot!

Each time you book a flight, Jet-Set Offset automatically calculates the air mileage traveled, and our organization receives your donation of 1 cent per mile. For a round-trip flight from Boston to Los Angeles, your donation of $52.22 offsets the 5,222 miles you flew, allowing SACE to combat climate change through our local and regional advocacy. And because we receive your donation directly, it’s 100% tax-deductible.

Why 1 Cent per Mile?

1 cent per mile is an average estimate of the cost to offset carbon emissions from individual air travel based on multiple carbon calculators. While this may not make your flight completely carbon neutral, each donation adds up and makes a tangible difference.
